Kindergarten
Meet the Kindergarten Teachers
Welcome to Kindergarten! Below you will find information about the curriculum we will be covering this school year.
Curriculum
Reading
Kindergarten will be utilizing the (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) HMH: Into Reading curriculum to improve beginning reading skills. We first focus on letters and their sounds and then begin blending those sounds to decode words in our Start Right Reader books.
Writing
The reading program incorporates writing and spelling:
- Writing is connected to our reading program to teach and grow the basic structures of language.
- Teaching phonetic spelling and building sight word vocabulary (heart words)
Math
We utilize the Illustrative Math program which incorporates manipulatives, partner work and student-based problem-solving
Practice and repetition of skills are through play-based centers.
Science
Our units include:
- Interdependent relationships in ecosystems, weather and climate and forces
- Interactions: pushes and pulls.
Social Studies
These four units explore:
- Civics: the participation of citizens
- History: comparing my story to your story
- Economics: yours, mine and ours
- Geography: different places and different ways to live
First Grade
Second Grade
Meet the Second Grade Teachers
Welcome to Second Grade! Below you will find information about the curriculum we will be covering this school year.
Curriculum
Reading
Through whole and small group instruction and the Into Reading program, the second grade will focus on expanding vocabulary, deepening comprehension and building fluency.
Writing
Throughout the year, we will write multiple narratives, respond to literature, craft procedural pieces and develop researched presentations.
Math
In math, we will use Illustrative Math to deepen our understanding of the numerical world. Every day we start math with a warm-up activity that strengthens our mental math functioning. Next, we work through activities with partners and groups to solve real-world problems that use place value and reasoning strategies.
Social Studies
In social studies, we will cover how to be a responsible citizen, how people interact with the environment, how to identify choices and decision-making and how communities have changed over time.
Science
We will explore how ecosystems work and learn about landforms and how they change over time as well as discover the properties of matter in our last unit.
Third Grade
Meet the Third Grade Teachers
Welcome to Third Grade! Below you will find information about the curriculum we will be covering this school year.
Curriculum
Reading
We will use the Into Reading program to explore elements of non-fiction and fiction.
Writing
We will be learning to write well-constructed paragraphs that are organized with an introduction, body and conclusion.
Math
A variety of concepts and facts for multiplication and division will be explored.
Social Studies
Our units of study include:
- American West
- Regional studies including Native American cultures
Science
We will delve into forces and interactions, weather and climate, inheritance and variation of traits and ecosystems.
Home connection
- Please help students memorize their multiplication tables through 10 X 10.
- Students must read every night for 20-30 minutes.
- Other weekly homework (math, spelling, reading, special projects) as assigned
Fourth Grade

Welcome to Fourth Grade! Below you will find information about the curriculum we will be covering this school year.
Curriculum
Literacy
Utilizing the (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) HMH: Into Reading Literacy program students will explore and utilize a variety of texts and writing and reading strategies to increase their depth of understanding in reading and expand their skill set in writing.
Math
The Illustrative Math program encompasses exploration, discovery and instruction on math concepts including fractions, measurement and geometry.
Number sense, problem-solving, shared thinking, discussion, illustration and critical thinking are utilized throughout each unit.
Science
Units include:
- Earth's systems
- Energy and waves
- Structure and function
Social Studies
Extensive Colorado units that explore:
Colorado's history includes:
- Becoming Colorado and the growth of the state
- People instrumental in Colorado's progression and Colorado today
- Culminating activities include Pioneer Day and The Living Museum

Special Education at Westridge assists students in developing skills and learning behaviors which enable them to benefit from the general education program. Special education services are provided in a variety of ways:
